HURRACANE MARIA & SME PR SOLIDARITY FUND:
With 155 mph force winds, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on September 20th, 2017, causing widespread devastation across its path. The whole Island was left without power, potable water and a crippled communications system. Throughout the Island, 15,000 people had to move to shelters, 70,000 homes were destroyed, towns were flooded, and many bridges collapsed. People’s basic needs could not be met leaving Puerto Rico in a humanitarian crisis.
Two months later, only 50% of the Island’s electricity has been restored, with the aid of temporary cell sites 80% of the population are connected again, and 91% has potable water. The lack of power is having a direct impact on business, jobs and the Island’s economy. Through a combination of relief efforts from the Federal and local governments, as well as, individuals worldwide and non-profit organizations, the people of Puerto Rico are starting a long recovery process.
Due to this humanitarian and economic crisis involving 3.4 million people, the Sales & Marketing Executives Association of Puerto Rico (SME) and its members are lending a helping hand to raise funds and channel donations to communities and families in need. Donations received through this fund will be invested on initiatives directed towards helping Puerto Rico recover.
